Obama’s last chance to save his reputation in Syria

Yesterday, US President Barack Obama ordered the Pentagon to eliminate the heads of Jabhat Fateh al-Sham group (formerly known as Al-Nusra Front) in Syria, Washington Post says quoting its sources in the White House.

In Obama’s opinion, the areas controlled by Jabhat Fateh al-Sham may become a base for terror acts in southern Europe.

The outlet stresses that while the White House ignored the group earlier, now it is unexpectedly exploiting vast intelligence resources including drones to eliminate its heads.

Washington Post also claims the president’s order proves that the US priority on the Mideast is the counter-terrorist operation, not toppling Bashar al-Assad.

What then made the Americans switch their priorities in Syria? Recently, Washington’s actions have been discredited. The International Coalition’s numerous airstrikes leading to mass civilian casualties, the atrocities of the US-backed “moderate” opposition’s militants, the ignored conditions of civilians – all of these opened the eyes of the world community to the real “achievements” of the American democracy on the Middle East.

Besides, Washington is obviously losing control over the terror groups it supports. Probably, the militants who keep shelling living districts and using chemical weapons against civilians, have felt some kind of impunity and are going to act against their sponsors.

Thus, within the last months of his presidential term, Barack Obama intends to save his reputation which has been undermined because of the disastrous US Mideast policy.
