The UN Security Council has agreed a compromise draft resolution to send independent officials to monitor the evacuation of civilians from Aleppo. The voting will be held on December 19.
Let us remind that on Sunday the UN Security Council considered a French-drafted resolution on the deployment of UN observers to monitor the evacuation of citizens in Aleppo. However, Russia has opposed the placing of untrained personnel in the danger zone of Eastern Aleppo, calling the proposal as “impractical and dangerous.” In turn, Russia circulated an alternative draft resolution.
According to the document, in coordination with the concerned parties of the United Nations it is necessary to make preparations for the security, which will allow staff to observe the organization of the state remaining in Aleppo civilians, as well as for full respect of international humanitarian law.
According to the US ambassador to the UN Samantha Power, in the compromise version of the resolution there are more than 100 UN staff, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent will monitor the evacuation of civilians from Aleppo.
