On January 18, a Japanese channel TBS published an interview with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad who mentioned the forthcoming Astana meeting.
According to the Syrian leader, one of the main aims is to foster truce to protect civilians and allow humanitarian aid to be delivered.
“We hope that the negotiations in Astana will become a platform for comprehensive talks between all the sides of the Syrian conflict,” Assad told the correspondents.
When questioned about the incoming U.S. president Donald Trump’s future policy concerning Syria, Assad said that the Syrian government wasn’t ready to discuss it but hoped that Washington’s priority would be fighting terrorism including such groups as ISIS, Jabhat al-Nusra and Al-Qaeda.
