UN: the Syrian opposition may be invited to Geneva

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said that members of the Syrian opposition may be invited to talks on a political settlement in Syria scheduled in Geneva on February 8. These talks will take place following the international meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan aiming to establish a more permanent ceasefire in Syria.

According to de Mistura, the UN prefers to see direct interaction between the armed opposition groups and official Damascus authorities to resolve the situation in Syria. He believes that the Syrian crisis should be resolved by the Syrians themselves.

However, it should be mentioned that for all the time the UN special envoy on Syria has not done anything substantial for the settlement of the Syrian conflict. That is why the Syrian people published a petition on the website Change.org demanding that the UN Secretary General, to suspend Staffan de Mistura from his duty.
