Today, on 22 January, the head of the press service of Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry Anuar Zhaynakov said that representatives of the Syrian opposition arrived in Astana for Syria talks.
As previously mentioned the delegation of the Syrian opposition in Astana will be composed of representatives of the armed groups operating in Syria and joined the ceasefire agreement of 29 December. There are Jaish al-Islam and Ahrar al-Sham among them. It is known that the political opposition won’t participant the negotiations. A list of other groups which will be a part of the delegation was not specified.
The main purpose of the talks on Syria, is a confirmation of the agreements of 29 December. The head of press service added that the discussion of new initiatives is not on the agenda of the talks.
It should be mentioned that the peace talks in Astana will start on January 23, at 1 pm on the Kazakh-time. The meeting will be held in the hotel Rixos President Astana behind closed doors. The delegation of Turkey, Russia, Iran, as well as the special envoy of the UN Secretary General on Syria, Staffan de Mistura, have arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan.
