At a briefing on Friday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura’s spokeswoman Yara Sharif said that the negotiations in Astana significantly contributed to the solution of the Syrian crisis.
According to Sharif, the Astana talks yielded three main results. First, for the first time, a direct dialogue between Damascus and the opposition was set up. Second, a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire will be created. Besides, de Mistura’s spokeswoman highlighted a joint statement made by Russia, Turkey and Iran that would strengthen the ceasefire in Syria. All of these measures are concrete steps towards ending the bloody Syrian war.
