Iran, Russia and Turkey started the new round of Syrian talks in Astana

The joint meeting of guarantor states (Iran, Russia, Turkey) on Syrian ceasefire regime started in Astana today. The representatives of the UN and Jordan also took part in the meeting. At the same time the participation of the Syrian government and the opposition is not foreseen.
Earlier at Astana talks which took place on January 22-23 the guarantor states decided to create trilateral mechanism to monitor the ceasefire regime in Syria.
Under today’s meeting the sides plan to discuss the maintenance of the ceasefire regime and draw up measures to control and prevent ceasefire violations, as well as the issues of humanitarian cooperation.  In addition, the parties would discuss the issues of increasing trust levels between the Syrian government and the opposition.
In his turn Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov stated that the meeting had technical character and also called it a continuation of the Astana process for Syrian crisis settlement.
