According to Associated Press, February 8, Lt. General Stephen Townsend who leads the US-led coalition in Iraq said that Mosul and Raqqa would be liberated from ISIS in six months.
He stressed that the operation in Mosul to begin in few days. The preparation for it has been already discussed during a telephone conversation between Secretary of Defense, James Mattis and Iraqi Defence Minister, Irfan al-Hayali. It should be mentioned that representatives of the coalition announced the full release of eastern Mosul last month.
It is noteworthy that in the beginning of December, 2016, Townsend said that the operation to liberate Mosul from ISIS might last another two months (until February of this year).
Later, on December 27, 2016, Stephen Townsend said that the liberation of Mosul and Raqqa and eliminating ISIS militants required two years. According to him, all of this is because of ISIS had plenty of time to plan their attacks, as well as cruelty, which is shown by the terrorists.
It is a big question if the new term is real or not. Apparently, Pentagon trying to explain the reasons for protracted operation in Mosul, has already entangled himself in its contradictory statements.
It is possible, that when Washington will succeed in the fight against ISIS, the government and the opposition will manage to reach agreement on a cease-fire throughout the territory of Syria.
