The UN to Vote on the Draft Resolution on Chemical Weapons in Syria Proposed by the West

The US, France, and the UK have proposed a new draft resolution on Syria in the UN Security Council. It might be considered on February, 27.

The project, first of all, introduce a new piece of sanctions against the Syrian military who are allegedly responsible for the use of prohibited forms and methods of warfare. The document condemns the implied use of chemical weapons by the Syrian armed forces and imposes sanctions against individuals and companies involved in the attacks. The measures include the freezing of funds, the exclusion to the UN member countries and the limitation of chemical weapons components’ deliveries to the Syrian authorities. The original list includes 11 members of the military leadership of the country and 10 specialized institutions.

It is worth mentioning that the draft resolution at the present moment is contradictory to the principle of presumption of innocence and the basics of international law. It reflects a one-sided approach of some Western countries and shows their biased view on the problem.

The fact is that the Mission to Investigate Allegations of the Use of Chemical Weapons in Syria now continues its work. Thus, it is still very early to draw final conclusions on who is responsible for the violations.
