According to Reuters, U.S. Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, told lawmakers on Wednesday that his department would work to increase sanctions pressure on Iran, Syria and North Korea “to protect American lives”.
It should be mentioned that earlier, on April 24, Treasury imposed sanctions against 271 Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center Staff in “response to a chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun. According to these sanctions, the named individuals were designated for materially assisting, sponsoring, or providing financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services in support of, and having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Government of Syria.
Other sanctions imposed on May 16 concerned five individuals and five entities that had cooperated with the Syrian government.
It is noteworthy that the list of sanctions expands in parallel with the successes of the Syrian army in the fight against terrorists. It is likely that in this way Washington intends to complicate the tense economic situation in the country, which, in the opinion of the current administration, can affect the level of combat readiness of the government troops.
