In an interview to the London-based Arabic-language Asharq Al-Awsat a former American ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, said that Syria would ultimately frustrate all the U.S. attempts to influence Syrian matters and would drive the U.S. out of the country.
He said in 2011 the U.S. was, first of all, mistaken in giving support to the armed opposition in Syria to demand Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster.
Besides, Ford touched the issue of the U.S. cooperation with Kurds. He stressed that that the U.S. would not defend the Kurdish forces it has been supporting so far in case the Kurds engaged in clashes with the Syrian forces. According to him, “what Washington is doing with Kurds is not only politically stupid, but immoral.”
He stressed that the White House should realize that its plans to overthrow the authorities in Syria never come true.
