UN predicts humanitarian disaster in Raqqa

Ursula Mueller, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, estimated Thursday that 50,000 civilians remained trapped in the Syrian city of Raqqa.

According to Mueller, citizens suffer from the lack of food and basic necessities, such as humanitarian aid, that is not delivered to the city.

Ursula Mueller stressed that because of unexploded ordnance and active shelling, civilians weren’t able to leave the city. In addition, she pointed to the need to organize humanitarian corridors.
