According to Lt. Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of Tal Afar Operations, the Iraqi army has liberated more than 94% of ISIS’ last stronghold on the Iraqi-Syrian border. The military has successfully recaptured 27 out of 29 districts in Tal Afar.
“1155 out of a total of 1655 square kilometers were liberated, which means that only 500 square kilometers are remaining, and that 70 percent of the total area is freed”, Yarallah said.
Earlier, it was reported that the troops freed the town’s center and were clearing the town of the remaining ISIS militants.
The battle for Tal Afar started on previous Sunday. Tal Afar is about 150 kilometers from Syria’s border and it’s among the last IS-held towns in Iraq.
